Christ the Saviour Cathedral

With an overall height of 105 metres (344 ft), it is the tallest Orthodox church in the world.
The magnificent building of the first Cathedral was consecrated in 1883 as a memorial dedicated to the Russian victory over Napoleon.

In 1931 the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was dynamited and reduced to rubble. The flooded foundation hole remained on the site until it was transformed into a huge public swimming pool, the largest the world had ever seen.
 
With the end of the Soviet rule, the Russian Orthodox Church received permission to rebuild the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The works were finished in 2000. The cathedral square is graced by several chapels, designed in the same style as the cathedral itself.
