Departure south of Porto and a first stop in Santa Maria da Feira. Situated in the centre of a region that, in the 11th and 12th centuries, provided the link between the north of the country and Coimbra, this city’s most distinctive feature is its castle. Built in the 15th century with a design and layout that is unusual amongst Portuguese castles, it looks more like something that has been plucked straight out of a book of fairy tales.
Aveiro is the next stop, located on an estuary of the river Vouga, the “Ria Natural Park”, a vast lagoon where the freshwater of the River Vouga joins with the sea a.
The city is a maze of canals where the colored prows of the moliceiros (seaweed boats) glide along. Here, a special tour on board a typical “moliceiro” (seaweed dredging vessel) as it meanders its way through the canals of the city. Visitors can marvel at the Art Nouveau façades that endow distinct charm to the city. After the tour time at leisure and it’s recommended that you sample the local delicacy - a sweet yellow pastry known as “ovos moles” , a specialty egg-based dessert made in Aveiro
