The oldest established wine-producing region in the world is also one of the most beautiful. This is why the Douro Valley has received UNESCO World Heritage status. The landscape was first shaped by the river Douro itself, and then human activity transformed the schist slopes with earth and walls, and the planting of vines that turn from summer green to fiery red in autumn. Over generations of careful viticulture, the terraces have been angled to best catch the sun and ripen the grapes to produce great wines.
Follow to Peso da Regua - Situated on the banks of the River Douro, Peso da Régua played a fundamental role in the production and sale of Port wine, for it was from here that the barrels were transported to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine was left to age in the local wine lodges. In this region, the vines are grown on terraced slopes leading down to the river, providing visitors with a series of spectacular views, which are best admired from the area's many viewpoints. After, visit and tapas lunch in the estate Quinta da Pacheca - open to visitors, enjoy the warm local hospitality and some traditional Douro wines of this magnificent Douro Estate.
Take the road along the river and get inspired by the superb panoramic view all around you. Shortly afterwards, you will arrive at Pinhão, which has an extremely beautiful railway station decorated with panels of the typical Portuguese blue and white glazed tiles. Return to Porto along the winding way.
